Sifu Norm Willis first opened the doors of Zen Combat Fitness in 2018. The name combines both ‘Zen’ emphasizing the value of meditation, intuition & self-control and ‘Combat’ unleashing the fighter within whilst learning to endure.

The idea of Zen was to find and create a harmonious balance between physical well-being and mental tranquillity. This was achieved through the variety of Mixed Martial Arts it offers and over the years, adapting the principles of each Martial Art.

Jeet Kune Do – Way of the Intercepting Fist

Jeet Kune Do, known as the Way of the Intercepting Fist, is Bruce Lee’s unique approach to martial arts. Rather than a fixed system, Jeet Kune Do comprises principles and training methods that empower individuals to cultivate their personal fighting style.

The core principles of Jeet Kune Do include Simplicity, Open-Mindedness, Effectiveness, and Directness.

These teachings were passed from Bruce Lee to one of his students – Sifu Jerry Poteet, the founder of JPJKD Association, with which Zen Combat Fitness is affiliated.


Hand to Hand Grappling is a close fighting technique used to gain a physical advantage such as causing injury to the opponent. Grappling covers techniques used in many disciplines, styles and Martial Arts that are practiced both as Combat Sports and for Self Defence.

Grappling most commonly does not include Striking or the use of Weapons, However, some fighting styles or martial arts known especially for their grappling techniques teach tactics that include strikes and weapons either alongside grappling or combined, grappling range, otherwise known as the clinch.

Zen offers other Martial Arts including Krav Maga, Wing Chun & Dacayana Eskrima, ensuring that each members relationship with these principles is strong, so it becomes easier to improvise in any given situation, which the member has not learned a specific technique.

Sunday Martial Arts Class


Sunday's Martial Arts Class Session (10:00 - 12:00) is taken a temporary detour from Sunday 3rd March 2024 until further notice.

This is due to the gym being used for filming / completing the Instructor's Hatton Boxing Course, as part of developing the instructor's skills further.

Other class sessions during the week (incl. Saturday) remain as normal. Please see class time table below.
